I haven’t met many people who are living their entire lives joyfully and to the full. People who understand their purpose and who have found their path, who feel fulfilled at the end of every day.

Truly happy people live normal lives, with all their triumphs and tragedies, and all their joys and sorrows. They still feel hurt, angry, sad and scared, but with minimal effort they can simply reset to their basic ‘happy’.

If this is where you find yourself today, I am delighted for you, and I applaud your successful completion of the journey of discovery and inspiration.

However, if you are not in the place we call happiness – for want of a better word – then perhaps you are living your life in neutral. You are just ‘getting on with it’, no longer mourning the departure of joy and peace from your world, but accepting that life is humdrum. Worse still, that life is painful, overwhelming, or full of hurt and anxiety.

It’s amazing how easily we can go from feeling sad that no-one treats us very well, to treating ourselves the least well of all, then wondering why our days seem bleak and unlovely.

According to the book, ‘Happiness for Dummies’ by W. Doyle Gentry, there are four main happiness ingredients:

  • A feeling of safety
  • A sense of satiation
  • A sense of perspective
  • Quietude

Or what resonates more with me:

  • A lack of anxiety
  • A feeling of having and being enough
  • An awareness of what is real and true (and what is just thinking)
  • A lack of agitation and a sense of peace

The people I love to work with are those who have failed to find happiness in a handbag or a new pair of shoes, on Facebook or from their next relationship. These are the people who say, “I’ll be happy when…”, not understanding that they are putting their happiness on hold, possibly forever.

You can be happy when you decide you want to be happy. Regardless of your weight or size, your popularity, your hair colour or style, where or how you live, or how much money you earn.
